A dental implant is extremely bio-compatible and can be thought of as an artificial tooth root that is submerged into the jawbone.
The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts, which are inserted into the jawbone where the teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth, this process is called ‘Osseo integration’.
Small posts are then attached to the implant. These posts provide anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
Implants can be used to restore a single tooth using a crown, two or more teeth using a fixed bridge or a full set of dentures.
Replacing teeth with implants helps to preserve facial structure which can prevent bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
